We love Slovenia!! We had no expectations for Slovenia but we thought that it would be a very 3rd world like country. Boy were we surprised!! Our first night we spent in Ljubljana in a Sobe (that's slovenian for room for rent) right in the heart of the ancient city. A river runs through the center of town and all along each side there are little restaurants and coffee shops/bars. It was so lovely and we really enjoyed walking along the river, watching the people and listening to music. The Slovenian food and wine are wonderful. We had an amazing meal that we are not sure exactly what it was but it was very very yummy. And if you can believe this the wine was only 0.75 euro a glass.
We left Ljubljana and rode 100km to a littlle town just outside of Koper where we stayed in another Sobe and had another amazing dinner. We ate and drank like kings and the total bill came to £14!
We are now in the seaside village of Piran, Slovenia. Slovenia only has 40km of coastline and we NEVER thought that this is where we would ever spend anytime. We thought it would just be a small country that we had to ride through to get to Croatia. We are enjoying Slovenia and the people so much that we are not ready to leave. We found a lovely furnished apartment for £60 a day and are staying here until Monday. We have been taking long walks along the Adriatic Sea, swimming in the clear cool waters. It is just mind boggling when we think about where we are. Sherry Osloond from Reno,NV and Bobby Nesbitt form Austin MN sitting on a beach in Slovenia on the Adriatic Sea. Heck I don't think we even knew where the Adriatic Sea was before we started this trip.
It is truly amazing and we are appreciating everyday and every experience.
We rode a train from Salsburg to Ljubljana and met a young lady from Croatia who was just coming back home from 6 months in Australia. She gave us a little history on the old Yugoslavia and the new countries that were created in its breakup. Slovenia being one of them. She said there was a joke in Croatia q Slovenia could open an umbrela and one part would reach Austria and the other Croatia. We are finding it a bit bigger and very interesting and enjoying what it has to offer. Just about everyone speaks english, they have good wine and an awesome beer cald Lasko. The Dark Lasko is very good!!!
We are spending a little time on the beach here before moving on down the coast to Croatia in a couple of days.
